The impact of person-centred supported living services

The impact of supported living care that puts people first

In supported living, meaningful change comes from how care is delivered. It is not the paperwork or processes that make the difference, but the staff who consistently show up, listen, and treat others with respect. When support is person-centred, it builds confidence, restores dignity, and helps people reconnect with their communities.

At Next Stage A Way Forward, we are committed to providing holistic supported living services across the North West. Our focus is on helping people move forward with greater control over their lives, backed by everyday human connection.

We also know that good care depends on the people delivering it. When support staff feel trusted and valued, they are better equipped to build lasting relationships with the people they work with. Paul O’Rourke, our managing director, shares more on this approach on LinkedIn. Read more here.

Why supported living requires tailored support

Supported living is not just about providing a place to stay. It is about helping someone live well, manage their home, and feel part of a community – whether they have learning disabilities, mental health support needs, or require independent living support.

Take Jay, who moved into our Next Stage supported housing service in April 2024. After spending years in one environment, the change was daunting. At first he kept to himself, unsure of what to expect. But with the support of a consistent team who took the time to listen, helped him decorate his flat, and introduced him to local activities, things began to shift.

Staff learned what made him laugh, what he found difficult, and what he needed to feel safe. Over time, small actions added up to something more lasting. Jay began to cook for himself, explore the area, and take part in activities that gave his day structure and meaning. Today, he describes the service as “life-changing”, not because everything is perfect, but because he was treated with respect, listened to, and supported every step of the way.

This is what person-centred support looks like in practice. It is not rushed, standardised, or limited by time constraints. Instead, it relies on presence. That is why we provide our services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to ensure that individuals receive consistent support and opportunities to develop the skills they need to thrive.

How we deliver person-centred support

Every person we support has different priorities and challenges. Some need help with daily living, others want support to build social connections or gain confidence around tasks they have never done before. We work in partnership with Registered Social Landlords to design support plans based on what matters most to the person, not the service.

What sets our approach apart is that it is guided by our unique values. We believe people should remain in control of their own support. Together, we establish personal goals and outcomes and collaborate with family members or friends to ensure the support feels natural and genuinely personal.

Our approach is shaped by:

  • Choice and independence – supporting people to make decisions, big or small, in their daily lives.
  • Respect – recognising each person’s strengths, aspirations, and preferences.
  • Consistency – providing stable support staff that build trust and confidence.

What independence looks like in daily life

Support at Next Stage A Way Forward is about real progress. For some, this might mean planning a meal or taking the first step outside after weeks of isolation. For others, it might mean starting again in a new area and learning how to manage change.

Independence is about having the space to try and the confidence to shape your own day. That is why we focus on creating opportunities that feel relevant and useful.

One example is our allotment project, a shared space where individuals grow food, learn from one another, and take pride in something they are building together. For some, it is the first time they have felt part of a group without pressure or judgment. It is not just about gardening; it is about being part of something and seeing the results of your own effort.

With the right support, every step becomes a way forward

By putting the person at the centre of care, we empower individuals not only to manage their day-to-day lives but to achieve their long-term goals. This is what makes supported living truly transformative.
