Growing Together – A Community Partnership that Cultivates Confidence, Connection, and Wellbeing

Growing Together: The Power of Partnership at East Ward Growing Together

*A story of connection, wellbeing, and community collaboration*

More Than Just Gardening

This isn’t just about growing vegetables—it’s about growing confidence, friendships, and a sense of belonging.

When Susan from East Ward Growing Together and Jodie, Community Link Coordinator at Next Stage – A Way Forward, connected, they weren’t bonded by a love of gardening, but by a shared understanding of its power to support wellbeing, social inclusion, and independence.

Together, they created a simple but powerful idea: use the allotments as a platform for people with additional needs to connect with nature, their community, and themselves.

“Attending the allotment with the individuals I support not only nurtures our connection with nature but also strengthens our community bonds.” – Jodie, Community Link Coordinator

“Jody from Next Stage popped along one day and we just hit it off. We both want attendees to have new experiences in a quiet environment with no pressure. I have had several success stories and our involvement with Next Stage can only benefit everyone we both support.” – Susan, East Ward Growing Together

Why Partnership Working Matters

Effective partnerships are built on shared goals, mutual respect, and joint action. Susan and Jodie show what can happen when skills and spaces come together.

– Trust and familiarity – Familiar staff and safe settings reduce anxiety and build confidence

– Shared knowledge – Susan brings gardening know-how; Jodie brings person-centred support

– Sustainable progress – Support doesn’t stop at the door—it extends into real life

These kinds of partnerships don’t just improve care—they build stronger communities.

A Story of Growth – Meet NB

NB was nervous at first. With gentle encouragement and a warm welcome, she slowly began to take part—watering plants, socialising, and even joining the knitting group.

“Attending the allotment makes me feel it’s helping me because I take something away from it. I feel happy and welcomed and build new skills. I’m meeting new friends.” – NB

This story is one of many—and proof that when support is consistent and community-rooted, people thrive.

Positive Outcomes in Action
