Building People, Building Futures: A Day with Paul, Workforce Development Manager at Next Stage

A Closer Look at Workforce Development with Paul

At Next Stage AWF, we’re proud of our people, and we know that the best care starts with confident, well-supported teams. That’s where Paul comes in. As our Workforce Development Manager, Paul plays a vital role in helping staff grow their skills, build their confidence, and feel ready to take on the challenges of care.

With over 35 years of experience in the sector, Paul brings knowledge, passion, and a whole lot of heart to his work. His role in training and development in social care is about much more than running sessions or ticking boxes, it’s about helping people believe in themselves.

“Knowledge is power, but sharing knowledge is empowering.” – Paul

Let’s take a look at what Paul does, what drives him, and how training at Next Stage is helping shape the future of care.

So, What Does Paul Do?

Paul leads all things learning and development at Next Stage. From welcoming new starters to supporting long-serving employees with developing their skills further, he makes sure everyone has what they need to do their job with confidence.

“I spend a lot of time listening, that’s where the best training starts, with people.”

Whether it’s delivering face-to-face workshops, creating reflective learning spaces, or helping employees through challenges, Paul’s approach is always practical, values-led, and person-centred. His typical week could include mentoring, reviewing training feedback, or planning new sessions.

Building More Than Just Skills

Paul’s role is about building people. He focuses on key qualities like communication, empathy and resilience, the things that make a real difference in care training.

“You don’t need to know everything on day one. What you do need is kindness, patience and the willingness to grow.”

Training and development in social care at Next Stage is known for being supportive and realistic. Whether it’s a new team member learning the ropes or a more experienced colleague exploring leadership, Paul makes sure the space feels safe, encouraging, and relevant.

Why It Matters

For Paul, the purpose is clear: better training and development means better care.

“When staff feel confident and valued, the people we support can feel it too.”

He’s passionate about making training in social care more human, less about paperwork and more about real understanding.

“Care is about people, so training should be too.”

What’s Next?

There’s lots happening in training at Next Stage. Paul is working on:

  • Reflective learning groups
  • Peer-led workshops
  • Creative, hands-on training methods

His hope? Our workforce will continue to feel excited about learning and that training will always stay connected to what people really need.

“I want people to look forward to training, to feel it’s something for them, not just something they have to do.”
